Dr. Hale is a certified instructor for the VISX laser

Dr. Hale, you have performed vision correction surgery for twenty years now. What peaked your interest in the field and how has it evolved over the years ?

RK started it for me.  I believed from the early on, and still do, that the day will come that corrective lenses, spectacles or contacts, will be a thing of the past.  Braces straighten imperfect teeth, hearing aids help restore hearing, and refractive surgery takes it all a step further by having the potential of making the eye more accurate than it’s natural condition.

Specifically considering the excimer laser, what are some of the major milestones in laser technology and what features define today’s state-of-the-art ?

The progressive changes in the optical zone sizes, treatment patterns, and tracking technology have added accuracy to current treatments.  Wavefront guided CustomVue treatments are the latest in a growing list of our evolutionary improvements and represent current state-of-the-art.

Now, you use the VISX Star S4 laser with CustomVue, the wavefront-guided capability that was FDA-approved in 2003. What are some of the unique features with this system and have you been pleased with your initial results ?

The Star S4 laser allows the surgeon increased flexibility in treatment pattern size and design.  The laser pulse patterns are more sophisticated and the system regulates treatment time in order to minimize the effects of temperature and humidity.  These factors can definitely effect the outcome.  Studies have shown greater accuracy in terms of post-operative uncorrected vision and subjective improvements in night vision.

Speaking of results, we notice that you publish your actual success and complication rates in the "Statistics" section of your web site at halevision.com. Why don’t more practices do this? One would think that the first question a potential patient would ask is, “What are your success rates?”

We agree, and this is precisely why we developed this capability for our website.  It is one of the very few in the country and perhaps the only one that doesn’t have strings attached to the resultant information.  Real Results required an enormous commitment in time and resources to update and verify thousands of records and to assure accuracy in our data.

Your resume shows that you are a “Certified Instructor” for the VISX laser. What exactly do you teach and has this influenced your practice in any way ?

The FDA mandates that any licensed physician who wishes to utilize the VISX excimer laser system to perform refractive surgery treatments must go through an approved FDA training course, given by a certified instructor.  This is true for all laser systems.  The responsibility of training other physicians to perform surgery is a great one, and must be taken that way.  It forces me to be continually up-to-date in order to answer the issues that arise in any training course like this.  I am honored that VISX trusts me enough to be among a very small group of active certifiers in the country.

Many eye surgeons now perform laser vision correction, which leaves patients with the daunting task of choosing the right surgeon. What would you say are the defining features of your practice that lead your patients to choose you ?

We are cutting edge, we are experienced, we are serious, and we are dedicated, both to our patients and to furthering the field of vision correction surgery.  We show this through our staff, our teaching, our willingness to publish our results, and it is returned by the trust shown in us by the many physicians, lawyers, judges, and celebrities who are among our patients and refer patients to us.

Most patients today have their vision corrected with LASIK. Are there any other procedures that are currently available or will be available in the near future that might be a better choice for some patients ?

Some patients are not ideal candidates for LASIK.  This can be for a variety of reasons, some anatomical, some medical, some occupational, some age related, etc.  Depending on the individual situation, there may be several options available to a given patient and new technologies are constantly emerging.  We do not limit ourselves to one modality and try to make everyone fit.  We would rather have patients wait for the best available procedure for them, even if it may be several years down the road.  We are currently evaluating several new technologies with several more scheduled to be released by the FDA this year.  All in all, a very exciting field.

Thank you for joining us Dr. Hale. Our last question is a curiosity that many potential patients may have. Have you yourself or any of your family members undergone LASIK surgery ?

The allure of LASIK is to free one from the dependence of glasses and contact lenses for daily living activities.  This is achievable for the vast majority of people, but at my age (>40, presbyopia) and chosen occupation (surgery), LASIK doesn’t totally accomplish this for me.  One of the technologies we are currently investigating may someday allow me to be corrected also.  I have performed LASIK on my two daughters, staff members, and many friends.  Some of my staff even date back to the RK days and have done well with those procedures also.
